GFWC Donates $5,000 towards SD Quilt Book
The South Dakota General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) donated $5,000 to the South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum (SDAHM) to cover a portion of the costs associated with publishing the book, South Dakota Quilts and Quiltmakers: Infinite Variety by Mary Fitzgerald.
South Dakota Quilts and Quiltmakers: Infinite Variety is a book based on Mary Fitzgerald’s research of quilts in South Dakota. She traveled across the state documenting quilts found in family homes and museum collections. This book also includes information about the quilters who made them if known. Ninety-eight of the 1,000 quilts she documented will be showcased in this book. South Dakota Quilts and Quiltmakers: Infinite Variety is projected to be released in 2017.
“The museum chose to publish this book because we believe this information is important to the understanding of rural life in South Dakota,” state Gwen McCausland, director. “The generous donation from the GFWC allows the museum to take one step closer in reaching its goal of publishing this book by 2017.”
“The GFWC of South Dakota believe in the value of this project because it supports women’s history and art in South Dakota. Like our mothers and grandmothers who enjoyed the art of quilting, we believe this book honors the quilters by sharing their art with the world,” stated Emily White, state president of the South Dakota GFWC.
