Herb E. Side – Throwback Thursday
For this week’s Throwback Thursday feature, we have this image of the cartoon “Herb E. Side” from our Sudlow Collection. (our apologizes if the image is a little blurry) SDSU Extension Service Weed Specialists encouraged correct herbicide application rates and times. They also taught correct calibration and use of spraying machinery. This cartoon shows 8 droplets of various herbicides hang from herbicide sprayer pipe.
Herb E. Side was a cartoon character created by Extension Weed Specialist Ken Frost. Frost worked for the South Dakota Extension Service between 1961 and 1966. His Herb E. Side cartoons regularly appeared in farm newspapers. He also created cartoons and illustrations for Extension Service presentations, and occasionally illustrated a student thesis or dissertation.
Inspired by Lee’s photography and career, the exhibit Through Leland Sudlow’s Lens: 40 years of Extension Service History is a visual history of the South Dakota Extension Service from the 1950s through the 1980s. The exhibit documents the programs offered by Extension, the people they impacted, and how Extension changed with the times. This exhibit is on display ONLY until February 29th – which is only about two weeks away! So if you haven’t come to visit the exhibit yet, do so soon!
