Lesson Plan: Farming with Horses vs. Tractors
Unit ­ From horse drawn farming to 400 plus horsepower tractors for farming.

Why is farming with tractors considered more effective than farming with horses?
Time Required:  30 - 45 minutes

Performance objectives: After completing this lesson students should be able too;
- Identify what one horsepower is equal to
- Identify the amount of land that a team of horses could work in the average day/season
- The effects of weather on horse teams as they worked
- The rest requirements for a team of horses
- Identify the amount of land that a 400 plus horsepower John Deere tractor can work in a day/season
- Identify some of the maintenance requirements for a tractor
- Identify some of the physical requirements for both types of farming and determine which one was physically harder on the farmer.

Necessary Materials ­ Word search puzzle, crossword puzzle, horse drawn equipment game, and matching game.

Evaluative Materials ­ Classroom discussion or quizzes generated from the Web material.
