Look Out Below!
After opening on March 15th, our weather exhibit here at the Agricultural Heritage Museum has shown great interest to our guests! One of the more intriguing pieces within the exhibit has been the World’s Largest Hailstone. Recorded on July 23, 2010 in Vivian, South Dakota, an intense supercell storm produced this amazing piece. After taking several measurements, the National Weather Service certified the hailstone as the largest on record. It measured 8.0 inches in diameter, 18.5 inches in circumference, and weighed 1.9 pounds. The amazing part is that the hailstone is thought to have lost mass from the time it fell from the sky to when it was preserved in a freezer, making it much bigger than recorded! The hailstone on display is a model based on the photograph of the original. #AgMuseum #LookOut #TBT
